Extreme Rules (2016) is an upcoming professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) event produced by WWE. It will take place on May 15, 2016, at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. It will be the sixth annual in WWE's production lineage for the Extreme Rules event. It will feature talent from the Raw brand.

Background[]

Extreme Rules will feature professional wrestling matches involving different wrestlers from pre-existing scripted feuds, plots, and storylines that played out on WWE's primary television program, Raw. Wrestlers portrayed heels or faces as they followed a series of events that built tension, and culminated in a wrestling match or series of matches.

At WrestleMania 32 in a Ladder match Battle Royal, the #1 Contenders for the WWE Championship, WWE Intercontinental Championship and the WWE Tag Team Championship were at stake. Randy Orton became the #1 Contender for the WWE Championship while Magnus became the #1 Contender for the Intercontinental Championship and Sting becoming the #1 Contender for the WWE Tag Team titles.

It was later announced on the April 11, 2016 episode of Raw that Orton would face Colt Cabana at Extreme Rules in a Barbwire match with the ring ropes being replaced with barbed wire for the WWE Championship. on the April 18, 2016 episode of Raw, after some coercing from both former WWE Women's Champion, Paige and Carmella; Brie Bella gave Paige her rematch against Velvet Sky for the WWE Women's Championship in a Sadistic Madness match. It was also announced that Matt Sydal would defend his championship against Magnus in a Scaffold match. On the May 2, 2016 episode of Raw, during the contract signing for the Intercontinental Championship match, Kenny Omega interrupted it and revealed that he had been granted a rematch for the championship and that the singles match would now be a Triple Threat match for the championship.
