Invasion (2016) was a professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) event produced by WWE. It took place on May 1, 2016, at the O2 Arena in London, England. It was the fifth annual in WWE's production lineage for the Invasion event with it having been previously known as Over the Limit and Insurrextion. It was also the second straight to be held at London's O2 Arena. It featured talent from the Smackdown brand.
Background[]
Invasion featured professional wrestling matches involving different wrestlers from pre-existing scripted feuds, plots, and storylines that played out on WWE's secondary television program, Smackdown. Wrestlers portrayed heels or faces as they followed a series of events that built tension, and culminated in a wrestling match or series of matches.
On the April 7, 2016 episode of Smackdown Shane McMahon opened Smackdown and revealed that Becky Lynch was cashing in her Feast or Famine Briefcase containing a shot at the WWE Divas Championship that she won back in January at Invasion against Ashley Massaro. He also revealed that Kevin Nash would defend the WWE United States Championship against Tyler Chandler after the latter defeated him at WrestleMania 32 with the stipulation being if Chandler beat him he would become the #1 Contender, although following the match Shane tricked Chandler and revealed that his earned title shot wouldn't be for the World Heavyweight Championship as previously thought but instead for the United States Championship. This would then bring out Travis Kooper who announced his intentions to get back into the World title picture after defeating Chris Jericho at WrestleMania which would then bring out Chandler who confronted both men, before Shane made a match between Kooper and Chandler which Kooper would win by Disqualification after Chris Jericho interfered followed by Chandler and Jericho double teaming Kooper.
