Title history[]
On the April 13, 2016 episode of NXT, Interim NXT General Manager Emma revealed that the NXT Tag Team Championships would be decided in a Triple Threat Ladder match involving three different teams on the May 4, 2016 episode of NXT. She revealed that Mason Wolfe would be apart of one of those teams and gave him a week to find a partner. After having failed to find a partner, Emma revealed the participants in the match: Mason Wolfe would team with Joey Ryan while Splash Anderson would team with Pinkie Sanchez and Alex Blade would team with Azrael. Emma even added a bonus to the match, with the winners not only becoming the first-ever NXT Tag Team Champions but would earn a shot at the NXT Championship at NXT R Evolution against Jacob Woods in a Triple threat match. On the May 4, 2016 episode after a back and forth as well as grueling match, Wolfe and Ryan emerged victorious and were crowned the first-ever NXT Tag Team Champions as well as earning the #1 Contendership for the NXT Championship. The current champions are Kip Sabian and Sammy Guevara who defeated previous champions Toni Storm & Shaul Guerrero at NXT Takeover: In Your House.
