The NXT Championship is a professional wrestling championship owned and primarily contested in WWE's developmental promotion, NXT. The championship is generally contested in professional wrestling matches, in which participants execute scripted finishes, and is viewed as NXT's top championship.
Title history[]
On the debut episode of NXT on January 20, 2016, General Manager of NXT, William Regal announced that there would be a Tournament to crown the first NXT Champion since it's reactivation. He talked about those past who had held the NXT Championship (Seth Rollins, Sami Zayn, Kevin Owens and Finn Bálor) and what it's done for their careers going forward with all of them capturing championships on the main roster. Regal then talked about how what winning the NXT Championship will do for the career of whoever holds it and called it one of the most sought after championships in professional wrestling history. The first tournament match was made as well with it involving Aric Hardy and Sterling Daniel Jacobs whom the latter was victorious in the first main event for NXT. The second being between Luke Harper and Scorpio. On the January 30, 2016 episode of NXT both Hardy and Harper were victorious in their matches and are set to meet in the Semi-Finals of the tournament. That same night Regal revealed the final set of Quarter-final matches being Mason Wolfe against Byron Knox and Alex Blade and Tommy End. On the February 10, 2016 episode of NXT both Wolfe and Blade won their respective matches and advanced to the Semi-Finals against one another.
