Background[]
Night of Champions will feature professional wrestling matches involving different wrestlers from pre-existing scripted feuds, plots, and storylines that play out on WWE's primary television program; RAW. Wrestlers portray heroes or villains as they follow a series of events that build tension, and culminate in a wrestling match or series of matches.
At SummerSlam Billy Cassidy defeated Roman Reigns to retain the World Heavyweight Championship.
The main storyline heading into Night of Champions is based around Triple H buying out SmackDown and merging the two brands together forming one large Supershow. The champions from Raw and Smackdown are all scheduled to face off with one another in unification matches with the SmackDown championships simply being retired. It was revealed by new General Manager of Raw Mick Foley that these matches won't necessarily be contested between the two champions and could involve multiple superstars. The night after SummerSlam it was revealed that Ciaran O'Donnell would defend his WWE Championship against World Heavyweight Champion, Billy Cassidy. Intercontinental Champion, Seth Rollins will defend his title against United States Champion, Jeff Hardy and Women's Champion, Maryse Ouellet will defend her title against WWE Diva's Champion, Sally Mason, all three matches are scheduled to be unification matches with the SmackDown titles being rendered inactive directly following the PPV.
