Background[]

No Mercy will feature professional wrestling matches involving different wrestlers from pre-existing scripted feuds, plots, and storylines that play out on WWE's second television program; SmackDown. Wrestlers portray heroes or villains as they follow a series of events that build tension, and culminate in a wrestling match or series of matches.

At the Great American Bash, The Riott Squad (Liv Morgan & Ruby Soho) would lose the WWE Women's Tag Team Championships to the team of Carmella & Charlotte Flair ending their reign at 189 days. A week later on SmackDown, the Riott Squad would defeat the team of Becky Lynch & The Bunny. Later that night Morgan would be attacked backstage with a steel chair by an unknown assailant with Soho coming to her aid, before revealing herself as the culprit and then breaking a glass bottle over her head. A week later, Ruby would explain her actions feeling as though she played second fiddle to Liv and that she got all the credit, the praise and was the one people paid more attention to. On the August 5, 2022 episode of SmackDown the team of Liv Morgan and The Bunny would defeat the team of Ruby Soho and Tay Conti. On the August 12, 2022 episode of SmackDown, Liv would team with her husband, Jake Anderson suffering a loss to Ruby and Kenny Omega. It would then be revealed that Morgan and Soho would face off with one another at SummerSlam at Sea III. At the event the match wouldn't take place as the two women got into a brawl backstage with Liv Morgan tackling Soho off the stage at one point. On the September 9, 2022 episode of SmackDown, Morgan's husband, Jake would come out to the ring and call out Ruby Soho. The two would exchange words with one another, before Ruby would strike Jake not once, twice but three times, the third time bringing Liv Morgan as the two appeared to be ready to brawl once again, however Jake did his best to try and prevent it, however it was to no use. A small brawl ensued between the two former friends, before Jake broke it up and as he did the SmackDown General Manager would make her way out before announcing that Liv Morgan and Ruby Soho would face one another at No Mercy in a No Holds Barred match and that the following the two would sign the contract for the match as well as a No physical contact agreement to ensure that the match will take place as scheduled.
