Royal Rumble (2017) is an upcoming professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) event produced by WWE. It will take place on February 19, 2017 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. It will be the 12th event under the Royal Rumble chronology and the second WWE pay-per-view of 2017. This will be the second Royal Rumble to be held in the state of Texas, after 2007.

Background[]

The Royal Rumble will consist of professional wrestling matches that involve wrestlers from pre-existing scripted feuds or storylines that play out on WWE's primary television programs, Raw and SmackDown. Wrestlers will portray heroes or villains as they follow a series of events that build tension and culminate in a wrestling match or series of matches.

The card will be highlighted by the traditional Royal Rumble match. At New Year's Revolution Noam Dar defeated Dean Ambrose and Shinsuke Nakamura to become the #1 Contender for the WWE Championship with his match being announced for the Royal Rumble. That same night Thea Trinidad won a Four Way Vickie Guerrero Invitational Match to become the #1 Contender for the WWE Divas Championship and will face Buggy Nova for the championship at the Royal Rumble. On the January 13, 2017 episode of Smackdown, Jimmy Jacobs won the Beat the Clock Challenge and earned an opportunity at Goldberg and the World Heavyweight Championship at the Royal Rumble. On the January 16, 2017 episode of Raw, Pastor William Eaver was one of the first to declare themselves an entrant into the Royal Rumble this was followed by both Shane Helms and Jake Anderson announcing their participation in the Royal Rumble a week later on the January 23, 2017 episode of Raw. After winning a match on the January 27, 2017 episode of Smackdown, Randy Orton won the right to choose his entry number in the Royal Rumble and he chose the number one entry. Daniel Riley and Nick Mitchell both were revealed as entrants in the Rumble. A few days later Johnny Mundo announced his entry and participation on the January 30, 2017 episode of Raw.
