SummerSlam (2016) (also written as SummerSlammiversary 11) is an upcoming professional wrestling pay-per-view event and WWE Network event produced by WWE The E-Fed that will take place on August 28, 2016 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. It will be the second consecutive SummerSlam to be hosted in the Barclays Center It will also be the eleventh annual SummerSlam event and will be WWE's eighth pay-per-view event to take place in 2016.

SummerSlam will feature professional wrestling matches involving different wrestlers from pre-existing scripted feuds, plots, and storylines that play out on WWE's primary television programs; Raw and Smackdown. Wrestlers portray heroes or villains as they follow a series of events that build tension, and culminate in a wrestling match or series of matches.

At Unforgiven two battle royals took place one to determine the #1 Contender for the WWE Intercontinental Championship and the WWE Women's Championship. Enzo Amore lastly eliminated Tommaso Ciampa to become the #1 Contender for the Intercontinental Championship and it was revealed by WWE.com that Amore would challenge the Big Show for the championship at SummerSlam. A little later on Taryn Terrell would lastly eliminate Rebel to become the #1 Contender for the Women's Championship and it was also revealed by WWE.com that Terrell would challenge the winner of the Brie Bella and Paige match that would take place later that night. Brie Bella would defeat Paige after Big Show would purposely shove Brie Bella down and due to one of the stipulations being that if anyone interfered in the match, Paige would be disqualified and lose the championship. This would bring out the Bullet Club who would help Paige from the ring before Brie could humiliate her even more and after attacking Big Show who inedvertenly fell on top of Brie, injuring her. The next night on Raw, Vince McMahon would make a rare appearance on Raw and would force Brie to admit that she cheated to win the title and gave her an ultimatum; either forfeit the title back to Paige or be fired as GM. Later that night Colt Cabana would successfully defend his WWE Championship in a Six-Person Hell in a Cell match and directly following the match Adam Cole would make his way out to the ring and it appeared as though he would cash in his Money in the Bank briefcase, however he chose not to and revealed that he would be cashing in at SummerSlam.

Over on Smackdown both Ciaran O'Donnell and Natalie Nova won their respective King and Queen of the Ring tournaments and thus earned championship matches at SummerSlam, with Ciaran earning a shot at the World Heavyweight Championship against Dolph Ziggler and Nova earning a shot at the WWE Divas Championship against Becky Lynch.
