Production[]

Background[]

SummerSlam will feature professional wrestling matches involving different wrestlers from pre-existing scripted feuds, plots, and storylines that play out on WWE's primary television programs; Raw and Smackdown. Wrestlers portray heroes or villains as they follow a series of events that build tension, and culminate in a wrestling match or series of matches.

On the July 17, 2020 episode of SmackDown, a match was scheduled between Raw's Adam Cole and SmackDown's Johnny Gargano where the winner would be able to choose the stipulation for the Eight man tag team match that would take place at SummerSlam, with the match having been made official the week earlier. Johnny Gargano would emerge victorious before a massive brawl broke out between Undisputed Era and Team Gargano. William Regal would come out and reveal the stipulation that Gargano had chosen which would end up being War Games – a match not seen take place in three years. On the August 3rd, 2020 episode of Raw it was revealed that the Big Show would be Johnny Gargano's fourth member of his team at SummerSlam, reciting his past history with Anderson. Later on, Anderson along with the rest of Undisputed Era would attack Big Show backstage, targeting his ankle it would then be revealed that Anderson would face Big Show a week later with the winner earning the War Games advantage for their team at SummerSlam – a match that Anderson would win, before he would take out Big Show injuring him thus ruling him out of SummerSlam and forcing Gargano to find a new partner for War Games.

On the July 20, 2020 episode of Raw, General Manager Noelle Foley made a number of matches for SummerSlam. First she named that Chris Jericho will defend his title against Kenny Omega in a Man Overboard match for the championship where the only way to in is to throw your opponent overboard. The second match that she named would be The Rock – whom had successfully defended his title against Randy Orton on the July 27, 2020 episode of Raw, would defend the WWE Intercontinental Championship against MJF in a Championship belt in a Crows Nest match where you have to fight your way from the main deck of the ship up to the Crow's nest to retrieve the championship. Her third and final match she scheduled was Penelope Ford ― whom would successfully retain her title against Liv Morgan that same night; would defend her championship against Maryse in a Captain's Dinner Bikini match, where each woman would start the match in their best formal attire and must be stripped down to her bikini underneath before being able to be pinned inside the ring. A match between Velveteen Dream and Big E would be made official for SummerSlam with Big E challenging Dream to put his Money in the Bank briefcase on the line to which Dream would finally accept after months of going back and forth with one another.
